What Can Cause a Broken Tooth?

If you’re reading this, it’s likely you have a broken tooth, and we’re sorry to hear that! Broken teeth can occur due to accidents, impact injuries, or even underlying fracture lines within the tooth structure.

If you do have a broken tooth, it’s important to act quickly and appropriately to reduce the risk of further damage and infection. We advise you to seek dental treatment as soon as possible.

Repair Options for a Broken Tooth

  • Minor Damage: For minimally broken teeth, options such as composite bonding or a simple filling may be appropriate to quickly and aesthetically build up the area of breakage.
  • Severe Cases: In more severe cases, repair options usually include crowning the tooth, which involves placing a protective cap over the tooth for complete protection from further breakdown.
  • Infection: A root canal may be required to clear any infection prior to placing a dental crown.

What Can Happen If a Broken Tooth is Left Untreated?

Severe Pain

If the break leaves the pulp (inner part of the tooth that contains nerves) exposed, the tooth is likely to be very painful.

Risk of Infection

The tooth is at significant risk of infection, which could spread to the jaw or surrounding tissues.

Root Canal Treatment

Infection could mean that a root canal treatment may be required to surgically remove the infection.

Extraction (Worst Case)

If the damage or infection is too severe, the tooth may require extraction. Dealing with the break quickly is essential.
